Truly, there is no finer place to spend Summer than in Erie, whether that was in 1888 or today. This Summer has been particularly fine with blue skies and warm temperatures. Prior to the pandemic, there were plenty of events to attend and places to visit. Now, not as much, so mentally I’ve been placing myself in some of Erie’s resorts in the 1880s. Come visit them with me now.

From a historical standpoint, the year 1892 was certainly one filled with events known to most Americans. 1892 was also the first full year the family of Harrison F. Watson, Erie roofing paper magnate, and his family lived in the beautiful West 6th Street mansion, now the jewel of the Hagen History Center campus.

I have yet to reflect upon the earliest residents of Erie County, the native peoples who once lived here. I’m overdue, and I apologize for my lateness because the 1888 book has so many fascinating stories to tell. I will be featuring objects in the Historical Society collection you may enjoy seeing for they are rarely exhibited.
