In August 2019, ECHS received a request from the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. They were creating an exhibit called “A Very Merry Pittsburgh” featuring vintage photographs of stores and businesses in Western Pennsylvania at the holidays. The Library and Archives staff provided several photos, mainly of Erie’s Boston Store.
The current exhibit includes photos of The Boston Store decorated for Christmas and also features a detail of a St. Nicholas icon print, original c. 1910. This image hung in the living room in the home the Krivonaks, an Erie Byzantine Catholic family. Many other photographs and artifacts from Western Pennsylvania depicting holiday scenes are also included in the exhibit.
The exhibit runs through January 5, 2020 at The Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman St. Pittsburgh. Hours are 10-5 daily.
The Erie County Historical Society is a proud member of the Senator John Heinz History Center Affiliates Program, which includes more than 125 regional historical societies and organizations dedicated to preserving local history.
